SUPERCORE Layout Planning & Design Tips
Get a pro look - without hiring a pro.
Once your tools are ready and your room’s prepped, it’s time to plan your layout. Getting this step right makes a huge difference in the final look and feel of your SUPERCore floor - it’s where precision meets design. Here's how to map out your project for the cleanest, most natural-looking result.
Which Direction Should I Lay My Planks?
Rule of thumb: Install planks parallel to the longest wall or the main light source in the room.
Why it matters:
-
Creates the illusion of space -makes narrow rooms feel bigger
-
Minimizes cutting - straighter runs = less waste
-
Highlights grain and texture - aligns better with your room’s flow
Common Scenarios:
-
Hallways - Run lengthwise, front to back
-
Open-concept rooms - Choose the direction that makes the entire space feel unified
-
Irregular-shaped rooms - Go with the dominant wall or light source
Pro Tip: Lay out a few rows (without locking them) before committing. This dry run helps you visualize direction and alignment.
Working With Odd-Shaped Rooms
Corners, alcoves, doorways, and closets can throw a wrench in a straight layout. Don’t worry - a little extra planning goes a long way.
-
Start at the most visible wall: Usually the entrance or longest visible wall — work backward into closets or tucked-away corners
-
Use paper templates: For curved walls or vents, trace with paper, cut out, then use the shape to guide your plank cuts
-
Doorways: Undercut door jambs so planks slide underneath (use a scrap plank as a height guide)
Keep in mind: Every plank doesn’t have to be perfect at the edges - the baseboards or quarter-round molding will cover small gaps.
Leave Room for Expansion
Being a limestone-based product, SUPERCore won't expand or contract, but it needs a little room for movement of the actual home over time.
-
Leave a 1/4" gap along all fixed walls, cabinets, pipes, and door frames
-
Use spacers to keep that gap consistent
-
No gap = buckling risk if your room heats up or humidity rises
Not sure how much to leave?
Don’t Forget to Stagger
You don’t want rows that look like a checkerboard — or worse, like a seam waiting to split.
-
Offset joints by at least 6" between adjacent rows
-
This gives your floor more strength and a more natural look
-
Avoid “H-patterns” or seams lining up in every other row
Use offcuts from the previous row to start the next - just make sure they’re at least 8" long.
What About First and Last Planks at walls?
Here’s the part most DIYers miss: planning for your last row.
-
Measure the width of the room
-
Divide by the width of the planks
-
If the final row will be less than half a plank wide, trim the first row slightly to balance it out
Do this for both width and length. The goal is symmetry, especially in visible areas like entryways or open spaces.
Quick Layout Mistakes to Avoid
Avoid these layout faux-pas that can turn a pro-looking job into a redo:
Starting in the middle of the room with full planks (you may end up with thin slivers on both sides)
Lining up seams every other row (looks mechanical and weakens joints)
Forgetting to stagger plank patterns for color variation (shuffle your boxes first)
Not dry-fitting your first few rows (you won’t catch layout issues until it’s too late)
Recap: Before You Start Laying Planks
Decide plank direction based on longest wall or light source
Check both width and length of room to avoid narrow final rows
Leave 1/4" expansion space around all fixed objects
Stagger seams by at least 6" between rows
Use offcuts smartly to reduce waste and maintain pattern
Ready to Lay It Down?
