SUPERCore Tool & Prep Checklist for a Flawless Install
Before diving into your SUPERCore flooring installation, it’s important to have the right tools ready and prep your space properly. The good news? This is a completely DIY-friendly project! With the checklist below and a bit of planning, you’ll be set up for a clean, smooth, and efficient install from start to finish.
Tools You’ll Want to Have On Hand
Most of these tools may already be in your garage. Here’s what we recommend:
Must-Haves
- Utility knife (for scoring and snapping planks)
- Measuring tape
- Straight edge or ruler
- 1/4" or 3/8" spacers
- Rubber mallet & tapping block (for tight seams)
- Pencil or chalk (for marking cuts)
- Safety goggles + work gloves
- Shears or fine-tooth saw (for cuts around vents, doorways, etc.)
Nice-to-Haves (Optional)
- Knee pads (your knees will thank you)
- Floor roller (for glue-down installs)
- Jigsaw or miter saw (for complex cuts or stair nosing)
-
Pro Tip: Cutting around odd shapes or door jambs? Use paper to create a stencil and trace the shape onto your plank for more accurate cuts.
Space Prep: Get Your Room Ready
Proper prep makes all the difference — it’s what separates a pro-quality install from a frustrating one.
1. Acclimate Your Flooring
- Even though SPC doesn't swell like wood, it's still smart to let it adjust to room conditions:
- Leave the boxes of planks stacked flat in the room for 24–48 hours
- Maintain room temperature between 65°F–85°F (18°C–29°C)
2. Clean & Clear
- Remove any old carpet, glue, nails, or debris from the subfloor
- Sweep or vacuum thoroughly before starting
- Temporarily remove baseboards or trim if needed — you can reinstall them after for a clean finish
Subfloor Requirements:
SUPERCore is versatile and works over many subfloor types — concrete, wood, tile, and even some vinyl. Just make sure your subfloor meets these conditions:
✔ Flat
- Must be level within 3/16" over 10 feet
- Fill low spots with leveling compound
- Sand high spots (avoid sanding old vinyl, which may contain asbestos)
✔ Dry
- Installing over concrete? Use a 6 mil vapor barrier
- Moisture-prone areas (basements, crawlspaces, slabs) require extra care
- Avoid areas that may flood or collect standing water
✔ Firm & Secure
- Subfloor must not flex or creak under pressure
- Avoid squishy spots, especially under old vinyl or linoleum
- If installing over existing flooring, ensure it’s smooth, clean, and well-adhered
Quick Reminders Before You Begin
- Leave a 1/4" expansion gap around all walls
- No need for extra underlayment — SUPERCore has it built in
- Do not glue, nail, or screw planks (unless using the glue-down version)
- Not suitable for outdoor use or constantly wet areas
- Shuffle planks from multiple boxes to mix colors and patterns evenly
